John trained at the Mackintosh School of Architecture (Glasgow School of Art) and practiced in Tayside until 2011 when he left his architectural practice to spend his time creating art. John is a member of the Scottish Society of Architect Artists.
An interest in people and places provides inspiration for John’s work and his distinctive streetscapes aim to evoke a sense of place in the representation of urban landscapes.
A two year fascination for the wee harbor and reed beds at Port Allen (just west of Errol on the Tay) resulted in a number of works focused on the infinite variety of colour and form that light, time and tide lend to the glorious abundance of the reeds.
The colour and form of some unusual fungi on a tree branch near Port Allen has inspired new ideas for sculpture and watercolours and that together with a series of studies of castle buildings informs John’s current practice.
