John earned his living with a pencil in his hand, having pursued an architectural career specialising in housing design and the planning of housing developments. However, the increasingly computerised architectural environment prompted him to develop his lifetime’s interest in drawing and painting.
He attended Glasgow School of Art evening classes, where his tutor was Sylvia Allen, the well-known painter and colourist, who invited him to join her own classes where he studied for a further four years under her guidance.
John is inspired by the painting techniques of Edward Wesson, Edward Seago and David Curtis, amongst others. He works mainly in watercolour as he enjoys the essential drawing aspect of working in this medium.
Now retired, he lives in Auchtermuchty within the beautiful rural landscapes of the Howe of Fife and close to the East Neuk villages, all of which offer an abundance of varied and inspiring subject matter.
John exhibits in a number of Scottish galleries and at the Scottish Society of Architect Artists’ exhibitions.
